ITC instituted 337-TA-1525 on certain mobile electronic devices. Parties, patents, plain-language scope, domestic-industry note, and why institution alone does not restrict imports.
The U.S. International Trade Commission instituted Investigation No. 337-TA-1525, Certain Mobile Electronic Devices and Components Thereof (91 FR 64398; FR Doc. 2026-20672), published October 8, 2026. The Commission ordered institution on October 5, 2026; the notice was issued October 6, 2026. The complaint was filed September 3, 2026, and supplemented September 17, 2026, under section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 (19 U.S.C. 1337).
trinamiX Sensing LLC and trinamiX GmbH allege Apple iPhone and iPad products (and named sensing components) infringe six U.S. patents. Institution is not a finding of violation and does not restrict imports.

Respondent responses due 20 days after service (19 CFR 210.13, 201.16(e)) · OUII will not participate as a party
Plain-language scope
The Commission's plain-language description of the accused products is: "iPhones and iPads and components thereof, such as its processor and TrueDepth camera with a Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser ('VCSEL'), a flood illumination VCSEL, and a near-infrared camera module, incorporating face authentication, 3D-sensing, and/or material detection capabilities."
Domestic industry and public interest notes
The Office of Unfair Import Investigations will not participate as a party. The Commission asked the ALJ to develop a thorough record on domestic industry, including reliance on third-party expenditures and expenditures outside the United States. Commissioner Pappas would have delegated public interest to build a record on consumer impact (privacy, safety, security). Respondent responses are due 20 days after service of the complaint and notice (19 CFR 210.13, 201.16(e)).
Section 337 investigations decide whether importation of infringing articles violates the statute; remedies such as exclusion orders are enforced at the border by CBP. An institution is not a finding of violation and does not restrict imports. Importers and resellers of the accused products should monitor the docket. An exclusion order, if ever issued, governs entry; it is unrelated to drawback eligibility.
